Manchester City’s disappointing start to the Premier League season has forced Pep Guardiola to adapt his tactical approach, with the champions recording their lowest points tally after five games in 19 years. The 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates showcased a more defensive mindset from Guardiola’s typically possession-focused side.

City have dramatically increased their use of long balls, with eight percent of their total open-play passes now being direct, the highest rate since the 2018-19 season. The tactical shift became evident during their recent matches, including 47 long balls attempted against Arsenal and 55 in their victory over Manchester United.
Guardiola’s decision to “park the bus” in the closing stages against Arsenal nearly paid dividends, but Gabriel Martinelli’s 93rd-minute equalizer denied them crucial points. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville noted that while the approach was uncharacteristic of Guardiola’s philosophy, it demonstrated the manager’s pragmatism in difficult circumstances.
