Real Madrid are sitting pretty at the top of La Liga with a “perfect” record, and if you believe that’s sustainable, I’ve got a bridge in Madrid to sell you. Los Blancos fans are acting like they’ve already won the league after six games, conveniently forgetting that they’ve been about as convincing as a politician’s campaign promises.
Their 4-1 “demolition” of Levante was apparently evidence of their unstoppable force, except Levante managed to score first and looked genuinely threatening for most of the first half. Kylian Mbappe’s two goals were lovely, sure, but let’s not pretend this was some masterclass performance. It was more like watching a heavyweight boxer struggle against a teenager before eventually remembering they’re supposed to be good at fighting.
The funniest part is listening to Xabi Alonso talk about being in a “construction phase” while sitting on 18 points from six games. Mate, you’re managing Real Madrid, not building a cathedral. Either you’re good enough to win now, or you’re not – there’s no middle ground when you’re spending more on players than some countries spend on healthcare.
Speaking of construction phases, Barcelona are five points behind and acting like the season’s already over. The dramatic Catalan media are in full meltdown mode, probably already planning Hansi Flick’s farewell dinner. Because nothing says “support your team” like writing them off after losing a few points in September.
But here’s the real comedy – Real Madrid fans celebrating like they’ve won the Champions League after beating teams they should be demolishing in their sleep. Levante, seriously? That’s like Manchester City fans throwing a parade after beating Luton Town. The expectations have become so skewed that not losing by three goals is considered a tactical masterpiece.
And don’t even get started on the Ballon d’Or drama brewing in the background. La Liga president Javier Tebas is already making excuses for why Lamine Yamal won’t win it, as if a 17-year-old not winning football’s biggest individual prize is some sort of conspiracy. Maybe, just maybe, there are better players in the world? Revolutionary concept, I know.
The best part about Real Madrid’s “perfect” start is that it’s September. Come back and talk about perfection when you’re still unbeaten in March. Until then, it’s just another case of premature celebration from a fanbase that thinks every season should end in May with them lifting every possible trophy.
