Historic Spending and Tight Races Define Final Month of Regular Season
With less than a month remaining until Decision Day on October 18, the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs picture is taking shape, but several spots remain hotly contested across both conferences. The league’s record-breaking $336 million transfer spending this season has created unprecedented parity and excitement as teams battle for the final playoff positions.

In the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia Union leads the Supporters’ Shield race with 60 points, followed closely by FC Cincinnati (58 points) and Charlotte FC (53 points). The battle for playoff positions has intensified, with teams like Orlando City, Nashville SC, and Columbus Crew all within striking distance of securing their postseason berths.
The Western Conference presents an equally compelling narrative, with San Diego FC leading at 57 points in their inaugural MLS season, a remarkable achievement for the expansion franchise. Vancouver Whitecaps FC sits second with 55 points, while Minnesota United FC rounds out the top three with 54 points.
Six teams have already clinched playoff spots, including Philadelphia, FC Cincinnati, Charlotte, San Diego, Vancouver, and Minnesota. However, the remaining positions promise dramatic finishes, with wild-card spots still available for teams currently on the playoff bubble.
The playoff format features the top nine teams from each conference, with the eighth and ninth seeds competing in single-elimination wild-card matches. The winners advance to face the top seeds in best-of-three series, creating multiple opportunities for upsets and compelling storylines.
As teams prepare for the final stretch, the impact of major summer signings like Son Heung-min to LAFC ($26 million), Rodrigo De Paul to Inter Miami, and Thomas Müller to Vancouver Whitecaps becomes increasingly apparent in the standings.
