The Philadelphia Union secured their second Supporters’ Shield in franchise history with a crucial 1-0 victory over New York City FC at Subaru Park on Saturday, clinching the award with one game to spare. Head coach Bradley Carnell’s side finished with a league-best 66 points from a 20-7-6 record, cementing their position as the top team in MLS during the regular season.

Danish forward Mikael Uhre proved to be the hero for Philadelphia, scoring the decisive goal five minutes before halftime with a deflected strike that ultimately secured the Shield. The victory was even more dramatic as NYCFC thought they had equalized in the final moments when Máximo Carrizo found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
This achievement represents a remarkable turnaround for the Union under first-year head coach Bradley Carnell, who replaced legendary manager Jim Curtin after Philadelphia missed the playoffs in 2024. Carnell, who previously led St. Louis CITY SC during their successful expansion season, implemented a high-press system and structured defensive approach that transformed the team into the league’s most consistent outfit.
The Supporters’ Shield victory provides Philadelphia with significant advantages heading into the MLS Cup Playoffs. They have secured home-field advantage throughout the entire postseason and will host the MLS Cup final if they reach it. The Union will begin their playoff campaign against the Eastern Conference Wild Card winner, with their Round One Best-of-3 series starting in late October. Having reached the MLS Cup final in 2022 where they lost to LAFC in a penalty shootout, the Union are now among the top contenders to claim their first MLS Cup championship.
