Liverpool Football Club have made a decisive statement regarding manager Arne Slot’s future following the club’s painful 3-0 Carabao Cup exit to Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, with the hierarchy maintaining unwavering support for the Dutch tactician despite the team’s alarming slump in form.

The Carabao Cup defeat marked Liverpool’s sixth loss in their last seven matches across all competitions, continuing a disastrous run that began with Crystal Palace’s dramatic 97th-minute winner at Selhurst Park on September 26. The reigning Premier League champions now find themselves in seventh place in the league table with 15 points from nine matches, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points and facing a genuine crisis just three months into the 2025-26 season.

Club Hierarchy Backs Slot Despite Poor Results

Despite the mounting pressure and increasingly vocal criticism, respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool’s leadership remains “100 percent convinced” that Slot is the best manager to navigate the current situation. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano emphasized the strong internal communication and unity at the club.

“Liverpool absolutely internally… and when I say internally it’s the hierarchy, the ownership, all the people at the club, really, really trust Arne Slot,” Romano stated. “They are 100 percent convinced that Slot is the best manager to handle this situation. Obviously it’s been a poor start to the season, but Liverpool are convinced everything will be okay.”

Romano further clarified that there are “no problems between Slot and the players or Slot and the management,” with the issues being “really from a tactical point and also mental”. The club maintains excellent daily communication between directors, management, and Slot, suggesting a unified approach to addressing the team’s struggles.

The Carabao Cup Catastrophe

Wednesday’s Carabao Cup elimination proved particularly damaging both for morale and Slot’s decision-making credentials. The Dutch manager made 10 changes to his starting XI from the previous weekend’s defeat at Brentford, fielding a team heavily populated with youth players and fringe squad members. Star players Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were left out of the squad entirely, while the bench consisted exclusively of players aged 21 or under.

Ismaïla Sarr continued his remarkable scoring streak against Liverpool with a first-half brace, while Yeremy Pino added a late third to complete the rout. The Senegalese winger has now scored seven goals in nine appearances against Liverpool, including four goals in three meetings this season alone. His devastating record against the Reds has become one of the season’s most striking statistical anomalies.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp delivered scathing criticism of Slot’s team selection, stating before kick-off: “I’m really surprised by the team he’s picked. I felt today was a big opportunity, go strong, get a win, get some confidence back. I’m not saying they can’t win with that young side but you’ve made it very difficult for yourself”. After the match, Redknapp was even more direct: “He selected the incorrect team. There’s no denying that… You can’t convince me that lineup and those substitutes would yield a positive result against a very capable Crystal Palace team”.

The Crystal Palace Curse

Crystal Palace have emerged as Liverpool’s nemesis this season, defeating the champions three times in three months across three different competitions. The Eagles first claimed victory in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 10, winning 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. They then secured a dramatic 2-1 Premier League victory at Selhurst Park in late September courtesy of Eddie Nketiah’s stoppage-time winner, before completing the hat-trick with Wednesday’s Carabao Cup triumph at Anfield.

Oliver Glasner’s tactical approach has repeatedly exposed Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities. The Austrian manager’s high-intensity 3-4-3 system, which emphasizes direct transitions, aggressive pressing, and exploiting space behind high defensive lines, has proven the perfect antidote to Slot’s tactics. Palace’s style, characterized by rapid vertical play and willingness to bypass midfield with long balls, has consistently caught Liverpool’s backline off guard.

Defensive Fragility and Set-Piece Woes

Liverpool’s defensive problems represent perhaps the most alarming aspect of their decline. After conceding just three goals in their first eight Premier League matches last season, they have already shipped 14 goals in nine league games this campaign. The champions have kept only two clean sheets in their last 12 matches across all competitions, with their last shutout coming against Burnley on September 14.

Set pieces have become a particular weakness. Liverpool have conceded five goals from set-piece situations in the Premier League alone, with only West Ham United and Nottingham Forest allowing more. This represents a dramatic regression from last season when defensive organization from dead balls was a strength of the team.

The team has also struggled against aerial attacks and long balls. Liverpool are facing more long-distance passes than any other Premier League team, as opponents recognize the space behind their high defensive line and the vulnerability of their center-backs when isolated. Teams have averaged fewer than three passes and less than eight seconds to create goal-scoring sequences against Liverpool this season, indicating how quickly opponents can transition from defense to attack.

Record-Breaking Summer Spending Increases Expectations

The pressure on Slot has intensified due to Liverpool’s unprecedented summer transfer expenditure. The club spent approximately £446 million on new signings, breaking the Premier League record for a single transfer window. This figure surpassed even Chelsea’s £434.5 million splurge in summer 2023.

The spending spree included three marquee signings that shattered previous club records. Alexander Isak arrived from Newcastle United for a British-record £125 million, while Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million. Hugo Ekitiké completed the attacking reinforcements with a £79 million move from Eintracht Frankfurt. Additional signings included right-back Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5 million), left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29 million).

To partially offset this expenditure, Liverpool generated approximately £260 million through player sales. Notable departures included Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, and Jarell Quansah, reducing the net spend to around £189 million. However, the scale of investment has dramatically raised expectations, making the current slump even more difficult to comprehend.

Tactical Issues and Formation Problems

The tactical difficulties plaguing Liverpool run deeper than simple individual errors. Slot’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation has created space between the center-backs and central midfielders that opponents are repeatedly exploiting. The departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and his replacement by Frimpong has disrupted Liverpool’s defensive structure, while Kerkez has struggled to adapt to the demands of inverting into midfield.

When Dominik Szoboszlai deputizes at right-back to accommodate Frimpong’s attacking instincts, Liverpool lose their most athletic presser in midfield. This cascading effect has allowed opponents more time to find passes through Liverpool’s lines and exploit the space behind the defense.

Ibrahima Konaté has faced significant criticism for his performances, though analysis suggests many of his struggles stem from being pulled out of position to cover the gaps created by the system. Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has been critical of “one or two performances” from the center-back, but Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher identified broader issues: “Liverpool are just not at the races at all defensively. Until they fix that, they can’t win the league”.

Slot Defends Decisions Amid Growing Scrutiny

Despite the mounting criticism, Slot has defended his team selections and maintained that Liverpool’s recent form does not increase the pressure on his squad. Speaking after the Carabao Cup defeat, the manager acknowledged the poor run of results but insisted it was consistent with his rotation policy from previous seasons.

“It’s always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition,” Slot said. “But it’s the same selection I did tonight as I did last season in rounds like this. There are many reasons maybe why we’ve lost six out of seven. None of them are good enough to accept losing so many.”

Addressing whether the defeat increased pressure, Slot added: “If you’re on a run of results like this, if you play for Liverpool, if you manage Liverpool, you know the pressure is there. And I don’t think it has changed much after this loss”. He noted positively that despite being 2-0 down and not pushing for a goal, the Anfield crowd remained supportive, which gives him confidence for the upcoming fixtures.

When asked if Saturday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa had become a “must-win” game, Slot replied succinctly: “Every Liverpool game is a must-win”.

Critical November Fixtures Loom

Liverpool face a potentially season-defining period over the coming weeks, with several crucial fixtures that could determine whether Slot’s position becomes untenable. The Reds host Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday, November 1, in what represents a vital opportunity to arrest their alarming slide.

Following the Villa match, Liverpool welcome European champions Real Madrid to Anfield on Tuesday, November 4, in a UEFA Champions League clash. A trip to Manchester City follows on November 9, before home matches against Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven. West Ham United away on November 29 completes a daunting month.

Romano cautioned that while internal support remains strong, results must improve quickly. “There are no issues; the players have complete confidence in Arne Slot, allowing him time, and certainly not escalating this situation into a major issue,” he explained. “The current season is the clear stance at Liverpool, still awaiting better results, expecting them to arrive as soon as possible. Because, of course, entering November, December, and January with continuous poor results would be unacceptable.”

The Arsenal Threat

Liverpool’s struggles have coincided with Arsenal establishing themselves as clear title favorites. The Gunners sit seven points clear of Liverpool after nine matches, having won seven, drawn one, and lost one. Arsenal have opened up a four-point gap over second-placed Bournemouth and are six points ahead of Manchester City.

Arsenal’s consistency stands in stark contrast to Liverpool’s volatility. Mikel Arteta’s side have won their last four Premier League matches, all by 1-0 scorelines, demonstrating the defensive solidity and efficiency that defined their near-misses in recent seasons. Having finished second in each of the last three campaigns, including last season when Liverpool pipped them to the title, Arsenal appear determined to finally end their 21-year wait for a Premier League crown.

Gary Neville declared after Arsenal’s latest victory: “This has got to be their year. I’ve had Arsenal to win the league the last three years – now four”. The former Manchester United defender believes Arsenal’s consistency, while not “spectacular,” will prove sufficient to claim the title.

Historical Context and Slot’s Background

Arne Slot arrived at Liverpool on June 1, 2024, succeeding the legendary Jürgen Klopp after the German’s successful nine-year tenure. The 45-year-old Dutchman joined from Feyenoord, where he had enjoyed three highly successful seasons, winning the 2022-23 Eredivisie title and being named Eredivisie Manager of the Year twice.

Liverpool’s extensive evaluation process, led by Michael Edwards (CEO of football at Fenway Sports Group) and sporting director Richard Hughes, identified Slot as their top choice due to his attacking philosophy, character, and talent for player development. The compensation package with Feyenoord was approximately £9.4 million.

In his first season (2024-25), Slot delivered Liverpool’s 20th top-flight title, winning the Premier League comfortably and finishing 10 points clear of the competition with four games to spare. This success validated the club’s decision and raised expectations for continued dominance. The current crisis represents Slot’s first significant test since arriving at Anfield.

Fan and Media Reaction

The mood among Liverpool supporters has shifted dramatically from optimism to concern over the past month. After winning each of their opening five Premier League matches and leading the title race, many fans believed the record-breaking summer spending had positioned them for sustained dominance.

However, the subsequent collapse has prompted questions about Slot’s tactical flexibility, squad management, and ability to arrest a downturn in form. Social media discourse has intensified, with some supporters calling for changes while others urge patience given the Dutchman’s successful first season.

Media coverage has become increasingly critical, particularly regarding team selections and defensive organization. The decision to field a severely weakened team in the Carabao Cup has drawn particular scrutiny, with many pundits arguing that securing a confidence-boosting victory should have taken priority over rotation.

Looking Ahead

While Liverpool’s hierarchy have publicly backed Slot, the coming weeks will prove crucial in determining whether that support remains unconditional. The club’s statement of confidence, delivered through Romano and other media channels, provides Slot with breathing room to address the tactical and mental issues afflicting his squad.

The manager can take some solace from Liverpool’s strong position in the UEFA Champions League, where they sit top of the league phase table with 21 points from eight matches. That European form demonstrates the squad’s capabilities when performing at full strength, suggesting the current Premier League struggles may be correctable rather than terminal.

However, with Arsenal establishing a commanding lead at the top of the table and Manchester City, Manchester United, and Aston Villa all ahead of Liverpool in the standings, the pressure will only intensify if results do not improve immediately. The club’s unprecedented summer investment demands a title challenge at minimum, making anything less than a top-four finish potentially unacceptable.

For now, Arne Slot retains the full backing of Liverpool’s ownership and management. But in the unforgiving world of elite football, where “every Liverpool game is a must-win,” patience has limits, and the next few weeks could prove definitive in shaping the remainder of Liverpool’s season and Slot’s long-term future at Anfield.
