The United States men’s national team secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Australia at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, with Haji Wright’s brilliant double proving decisive in ending the Socceroos’ impressive 12-match unbeaten streak. However, the victory was overshadowed by an early injury to captain Christian Pulisic, raising concerns ahead of crucial upcoming fixtures.

Wright Seizes His Opportunity

Making his first start under Mauricio Pochettino and just his fifth overall appearance in a USMNT shirt, Haji Wright delivered a performance that may have secured his place in the 2026 World Cup squad. The 27-year-old Coventry City striker, who had previously been limited to substitute appearances in 14 of his last 18 international call-ups, made the most of his opportunity against the 25th-ranked Socceroos.

Wright’s equalizer in the 33rd minute came just minutes after Pulisic’s injury-forced departure, providing the perfect response to Australia’s early lead. The Los Angeles native expertly controlled Cristian Roldan’s through ball with his left foot before lifting it over goalkeeper Matthew Ryan from approximately 10 yards with his right foot. His second goal proved even more spectacular, as he ran onto Roldan’s quick free-kick from 80 yards out, cut inside past Cameron Burgess with a sublime piece of skill, and curled the ball into the far corner with his left foot.

Pulisic’s Worrying Departure

The night’s most concerning moment came in the 31st minute when Christian Pulisic was forced off with what Pochettino later described as a hamstring injury. The AC Milan forward had already been managing an ankle problem from preseason and was limited to substitute duty against Ecuador earlier in the window due to swelling.

Pulisic’s exit came after two separate incidents with Australian defender Jason Geria. The first occurred in the 15th minute when Geria’s tackle trapped Pulisic’s right ankle, leaving him down for 30 seconds before continuing. The decisive moment came 11 minutes later when Geria clipped Pulisic from behind during a promising counter-attack, earning a yellow card and prompting immediate concern from the USMNT medical staff.

“He felt something in his hamstring. Tomorrow he will fly to Italy, and we will evaluate him tonight, but we cannot provide any details at this moment,” Pochettino explained in his post-match press conference. The injury is particularly worrying given Pulisic’s importance to both club and country, with the 27-year-old set to undergo medical tests upon his return to Milan.

Australia’s Early Promise

Australia had taken the lead in the 19th minute through Jordan Bos, who capitalized on a defensive miscommunication to score his second international goal. The goal came after a throw-in deflection left James Sands struggling to clear, allowing Bos to chest the ball down inside the penalty area and hook it past Matt Freese with his left foot.

The Socceroos, managed by Tony Popovic, had entered the match on an exceptional run of form, having won their previous seven matches and remaining unbeaten since a September 2024 defeat to Bahrain in World Cup qualifying. Their disciplined defensive structure and quick counter-attacking threat posed consistent problems for Pochettino’s side throughout the opening exchanges.

Pochettino’s Tactical Adjustments

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino made six changes to his starting lineup from the Ecuador draw, bringing in Pulisic, Wright, Roldan, Sands, Mark McKenzie, and Alex Freeman. The decision to start Sands and Roldan as a central midfield partnership for the first time proved inspired, with Roldan’s creative influence directly contributing to both American goals.

The victory represented Pochettino’s 12th win in 20 matches since taking charge of the national team, improving his record to 12 wins, seven defeats, and one draw. More significantly, it marked the first time under his tenure that the USMNT had successfully come from behind to win a match.

Crowd and Venue Details

The match was played in front of 18,218 spectators at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, showcasing the growing support for the national team in Colorado. The venue, which sits at over 5,200 feet above sea level and serves as the home of the Colorado Rapids, provided an atmospheric backdrop for the international friendly.

Looking Forward

The victory concluded a successful October window for the United States, following their creditable 1-1 draw with Ecuador in Austin, Texas. The team has now remained unbeaten in three straight matches against World Cup-qualified opponents, including previous victories over Japan.

The USMNT will next face Paraguay on November 15 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, followed by a match against Uruguay three days later in Tampa, Florida. These fixtures will provide crucial preparation as Pochettino continues to build toward the 2026 World Cup, which will be held on home soil across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Wright’s standout performance, combined with Roldan’s creative excellence, offers encouragement for American fans despite the concern over Pulisic’s fitness. With limited time remaining before the World Cup squad selection, performances like Wright’s two-goal display could prove decisive in earning a place in Pochettino’s final 26-man roster.
